Sustainability Keeping our carbon footprint small
Elk Grove Milling has spent years developing our sustainable production practices. Through the use of our exclusive barrel program which reduces waste on the ranch, to the use of locally sourced organic commodities and repurposed almond hulls and rice bran, our feeds and forage are as environmentally friendly as we can make them. Our mill uses electric forklifts and zero emission energy production, giving Elk Grove Milling the smallest carbon footprint while delivering top quality feeds and forage.
Barrel Program
Elk Grove Milling Stable Mix products and forage mixes come in 50# bags and recycled 55 gal drums, that hold 250# of pellets. There is a one-time deposit on the barrel. The barrel is not for resale and is the sole property of Elk Grove Milling, Inc. When barrels of feed are empty, customer will return the barrel to a feed store that carries EGM products and exchange for a full barrel of pellets. The barrels come with a twist top lid for ease in handling and quality control.
Weed Free
Our feeds are welcome in the Federal parks, BLM land and the US Forest Service lands. Having “Certified Weed Free” printed on the bags and the ingredient tags, ensures ease in entering parks and other states. Weed seed particles are non-viable, thus preventing the spread of noxious weeds.
Sustainable Farming
Locally farmed by community families supporting economic development and growth within our community. By farming locally, we also reduce emissions associated with transporting and storing hay prior to production.
We utilize Grow West from start to finish in our farming operation ensuring all applications on our fields are the ideal match to the hay being grown and allow us to eliminate the need for unnecessary or unsuitable applications. We also use damaged or unworkable byproduct from the milling process that is rendered inert to till back into the fields as a form of natural fertilizer, helping us work towards zero waste in production and farming.
As for the hay and forage itself, the varieties grown are sustainable themselves. A blend formulated by Grow West meets the needs of Elk Grove Milling and the farmland it grows on. A blend of Oat Hay, Wheat Hay, Barley Hay, and Ryegrass Hay produces a diverse and high yielding crop. These cereal grains are a sustainable choice as they provide erosion control of soil and weed suppression naturally while building the quality of the soil.
